Established in 1998, Chellomedia is part of Liberty Global, Inc., the world's leading international operator, serving 16.6 million customer homes in 14 countries with video, broadband and telephone services, with 34.8 million homes passed.
Chellomedia has significantly developed its business and revenues through mergers & acquisitions and organic growth. A number of the channels are distributed globally, such as Zone Reality, the Extreme Sports Channel, JimJam, Zone Club and Canal Panda, while others are developed and managed specifically for regional markets, such as Film1 and Sport1, the premium movie and sports bouquet for the Benelux markets.
Key recent milestones include:
- Acquisition of the Teuve channel portfolio in Spain from ONO, April 2010
- Chello Multicanal joint venture launched with Zon Multimedia, under the name Dreamia, November 2009
- Chello Zone joint venture with CBS launched in the UK with CBS, November 2009
- Acquisition of documentary channel Spektrum for Chello Central Europe in September 2008
- The launch of the Chello Foundation January 2008, with the Taoiseach of Ireland (Prime Minister of the Irish Republic), Mr Bertie Ahern, January 2008
- Acquisition of TV Paprika, TV Deko and Filmmuzeum for Chello Central Europe
- Acquisition of JimJam and launch of an international channel joint venture with HiT Entertainment to be run by Chello Zone
- Acquisition of the balance of 50% of Minimax for Chello Central Europe in 2007
- Acquisition of the Canal+ Movie and Sports premium channels in 2005 for Chello Benelux
- Acquisition of the remaining 50% of IPS Multicanal in 2005 for its Iberian operations
- Acquisition of Sport1&2, Hungary in 2005 for its portfolio of channels in Central Europe
- Acquisition of 90% of Zonevision in 2005, with the further consolidation in 2007
- The launch of the Extreme Sports Channel in 1999 and acquisition of the remaining 30% in 2005
